10 Popular Android Medical Apps

As Android platform smartphones rapidly increase in popularity, the number of apps for Android are increasing as well.  Android phones have their advantages; a larger variety of devices are available for Android than iOS platform and Android phones can download outside programs and apps, whereas iPhones generally can't.  A month ago, I posted 10 Popular Medical Apps for iPhone, so here are 10 Android medical apps:


5-Minute Clinical Consult
Type:  Reference
Fee or Free:  $99.95
5-Minute Clinical Consult is a condition and diagnosis app by McGraw Hill.  The app is a guide of symptoms and conditions to assist physicians in making a diagnosis and following up without the need for internet connection.  It also includes the Diagnosaurus diagnostic guide and has over 900 medical conditions and 200 pediatric topics.  5-Minute Sports Medicine Consult and 5-Minute Emergency Medicine Consult are also available through Unbound Medicine's line of apps.

ABG Stat
Type:  Tool
Fee or Free:  $1.99
ABG Stat is a good tool for both doctors and nurses to have on their Android phone.  This app is an arterial blood gas calculator as well as an anion gap, A-a gradient and oxygen content calculator.  Values can be added with a slot-roller input and will give possible causes for abnormal results.

Allscripts Remote
Type:  EMR
Fee or Free:  FREE
Allscripts Remote is an incredibly effective mobile companion to Allscripts Enterprise, Professional and ePrescribe EHR systems.  Doctors can view patients records in real time and make medical decisions while away from the office.  Other great features of this app are the ability to fax information to emergency rooms, writing prescriptions through ePrescribe, a schedule viewer and a lab result manager.  The best part about Allscripts Remote is that all changes and actions made through the app are logged in the Allsripts EHR system.

Dosage Calc
Type:  Tool
Fee or Free:  FREE
Dosage Calc is a very useful free app for doctors and nurses to double check drug volumes and dosage.  Guides and calculators for volume of liquid, IV volume and drop rate and number of tablets can prevent second guessing and making fatal errors.  This is the first version of this app, so expect possible changes in the future in function as well as price.

EKGdroid
Type:  Reference
Fee or Free:  $3.99
EKGdroid is a bare-bones electrocardiogram app.  It demonstrates the components of common arrhythmias. This app shows zoom-able diagrams of arrhythmias with details about the PRI, QRS and rhythm.

Epocrates
Type:  Reference
Fee or Free:  FREE
Epocrates is a highly rated reference app available for Android as well as iPhone.  The free version features a drug reference, Epocrates Rx which has a pill identifier, an interaction checker and drug monographs.  Upgrades are available for $99/year and $159/year and include an infectious disease treatment guide and disease monographs.

MedCalc 3000 Complete
Type:  Tool
Fee or Free:  $9.99
MedCalc 3000 Complete is a highly-rated general comprehensive calculator app and dose converter app.  Along with basic calculators for A-a gradient, opioid medication dose conversion and water deficit hypernatremia, it can do more complex calculations like Acetaminophen toxicity assessment, blood pressure percentile in children and height for age percentiles in boys.  This app also has clinical criteria sets as well as decision tree modules.  The 3000 Complete is just one in a series of MedCalc apps for various medical specialties.

OncoEMR
Type:  EMR
Fee or Free:  FREE
Doctors who have the oncology-specialized OncoEMR system installed in their practice have free access to this Android app.  The OncoEMR system itself if a web-based platform that offers access from anywhere, which has integrated faxing directly into patient charts and the SeeMyChart patient portal.  The downside to this app is that charts are only read-only on smartphone devices.

PubMed Mobile Pro
Type:  Reference
Fee or Free:  $2.99
The mobile app of PubMed is a directory of a large database of internet published medical information.  As the pay pro version of this app, users can search for authors, journal titles and do searches for citations form the journals.  Mobile Pro users are also free to comment on the articles.

SmartEMR Mobile
Type:  EMR
Fee or Free:  FREE
SmartEMR Mobile is a free app for the SmartEMR program.  This is another web-based EMR platform with ePrescribe with Surescripts and has integrated lab results, working with major labs like Quest and LabCorp.  Android users have access to the EMR system but it does not specify what functions are available.
